Live Blog- Mt. Vernon vs. Roman Catholic

Mt. Vernon (NY) is a traditional East coast power. This year, they are led by senior forward Kevin Jones. Roman Catholic (PA) boasts a well-rounded lineup including junior guard Maalik Wayns and sophomore guard Rakeem Brookins.

1:40pm- The score is 9-9, about three minutes in. Wayns has two three for his side, while Kevin Jones has seven for Mt. Vernon.

1:44pm- A few minutes ago, Kevin Jones had blocks on back-to-back Roman Catholic trips down the court.

1:46pm- Kevin Jones has 16 points through six and a half minutes of play. He has Mt. Vernon's last nine points.

1:47pm- Wayns just hit his thrid three-pointer. Mt. Vernon leads 20-16.

1:48pm- Wayns just hit his FOURTH three-ball of the first quarter. That gives him 12 points, and cuts a the lead to one.

1:49pm- Mt. Vernon scored a deuce, and then Wayns came back with another thee-pointer. He has 15 points on 5/6 shooting from three-point land. It's all tied up at 22 after one quarter.

1:50pm- Jones and Wayns were extrememely impressive in the first quarter. As the two combined for 31 of the 44 points in total. Jones had 16 and Wayns had 15.

1:51pm- Roman Catholic has just taken the lead after the three-ball, coming after a Mt. Vernon deuce.

1:52pm- Mt. Vernon just re-took the lead, 26-25.

1:53pm- For some reason, Kevin Jones is not in the game right now.

1:54pm- Mt. Vernon freshman guard Jabarie Hinds just had a fantastic blocked shot down low.

1:56pm- Wayns just hit a beautiful shot off a drive to the hoop, showing that he is not just a pure long-range shooter. Rather, he can get to the rim as well.

1:59pm- Update: Roman Catholic leads 34-29 with 3:44 left in the second quarter.

2:03pm- Junior guard Sherrod Wright just had a nice drive to the hoop for Mt. Vernon.

2:04pm- After two free throws from Wright, Mt. Vernon has cut the lead to three, 36-33. There is about 30 seconds left in the half.

2:05pm- Wright just scored again to cut the lead to one.

2:06pm- Jones missed a buzzer-beater for Mt. Vernon, so the score will be 36-35 entering the half. Jones did not score in the second quarter, and Wayns had only two.

2:19pm- Jones went 1/2 at the line to start the half. Soon, after, Wayns did the same. The teams have basically been trading baskets, and Mt. Vernon is on top 41-39, after Sherrod Wright converted on an and-one.

2:21pm- Sophomore guard Rakeem Brookins hit a three for Roman Catholic, and then Jones scored on a layup for the Knights of Mt. Vernon.

2:22pm- Mt. Vernon just called timeout with 4:33 left in the third quarter. It's all tied up at 43.

2:23pm- Kevin Jones is back on track. He has been a beast down low this quarter. He just scored yet again.

2:24pm- Brookins just knotted the score up once again, after Mt. Vernon junior guard Vaughn Allen had two chances to score, but could not convert.

2:25pm- Senior forward Wes Kirkland scored for Roman Catholic. Sherrod Wright then hit a three for the Knights, out them back ahead by one. Roman Catholic answered with a deuce of their own, re-taking the lead.

2:27pm- Wes Kirkland just hit a three to put his team up four. Kevin Jones then missed a pull-up jumper on teh other end from about 15 feet. Mt Vernon scored on teh rebound, then senior forward Will Kirkland scored for Roman Catholic. A lot of action these past few minutes!

2:28pm- Vaughn Allen just hit two shots at the line for Mt. Vernon, cutting the lead to two. Jordan Lessane, a junior guard for the Knights, then stole the ball and hit an uncontested layup, tying the game at 54 a piece with 38.0 to go in the quarter.

2:30pm- Mt. Vernon is full-court pressing right now. Roman Catholic was just called for an offensive foul after breaking the press.

2:31pm- Lessane just kicked it out to Jones at the three point line. He took a few dribbled and spotted up from around 17 feet for a jumper, that went through, giving Mt. Vernon the lead.

2:32pm- Roman Catholic couldn't get off a shot before the buzzer, so they will be down two entering the final quarter of play.

2:33pm- Wayns drove and dished to start the quarter, but his teammat couldn't get a handle on the ball down low.

2:35pm- Jones just showed off his speed, knocking the ball away from behind, which then led to two Nt. Vernon free thrwos, as the re-gained the lead, 58-57.

2:37pm- Impressive play from Jones. He cut down the baseline, got a pass and took a three. He missed, but followed his shot and got the board. His second attempt was blocked. He stuck with it, picked the ball up and hit a layup. Nice effort from the West Virginia-bound senior.

2:38pm- Wayns converted on an and-one to tie it up, then freshman forward Aaron Brown scored for Roman Catholic, as they re-took the lead.

2:39pm- Jabarie Hinds scored to tie it back up, this time at 62 each.

2:40pm- Hinds just took it to the hoop, scored, and drew the foul. He hit the and-one shot, giving his team a three-point cushion.

2:41pm- Courtney Stanley was fouled by Jabarie Hinds, as he took a layup. It went through, and then he knocked down the free throw, evening the game at 65. There is 3:48 to go in regulation.

2:43pm- After a Stanley steal, Brookins got the ball and was foueld while shooting. He hit one of two, putting Roman Catholic up 66-65.

2:46pm- Mt. Vernon just drained two free throws to go up 67-66. Sherrod Wright just score, bumping the lead up to three. Aaron Brown then scored at the other end. The lead is quickly back to one. Well, now its three again. Kevin Jones just scored off a gorgeous spin move and one-handed shot. With that, the Knights lead 71-68 with only 1:32 remaining. This is a great game.

2:48pm- Wayns just hit a three pointer to tie it up.

2:49pm- Allen just hit two free throws for Mt. Vernon. He then fouled Will Kirkland at the other end with 57.2 left. The senior hit both. All tied up.

2:51pm- Mt. Vernon is holding for the last shot.

2:52pm- Hinds drove the ball and got fouled on his shot with 3.6 left. It was a blocking call. The freshman will step to the charity stripe with the game on the line.

2:53pm- Hinds knocked down the first. His second shot rimmed out.

2:55pm- Roman Catholic grabbed the lose ball, and has it out-of-bounds with 1.2 left after a timeout.

2:56pm- Wes Kirkland's in-bounds pass sailed out-of-bounds off the hands of a teammate. There is just 0.3 left.

2:57pm- Mt. Vernon in-bounded the ball to senior guard Ketema Brooks, and the game ended with a 74-73 win for Mt. Vernon.

3:10pm- Maalik Wayns won MVP for Roman Catholic, while Kevin Jones won the award for Mt. Vernon. Wayns had 26 points. Jones had 27 points and 12 boards. Sherrod Wright scored 22 for Mt. Vernon as well.

3:25pm- Kevin Jones was nice enough to talk with me after his great performance today. Later on, I also spoke with Jabarie Hinds. Again, I will fill you in on what we talked about as soon as I can.
