Live Blog- Whitney Young vs. Helen Cox

The matchup between Whitney Young (IL) and Helen Cox (LA) has just gotten underway. Helen Cox features senior big man Greg Monroe, who is arguably the best player in the nation. Whitney Young's roster includes junior forward Marcus Jordan, the son of Michael Jordan. I'll fill you in on the action.

6:09pm- Calvin Thompson, a senior guard on Helen Cox, has just opened up the scoring with two free throws. It's 2-0 in favor of the Cougars of Helen Cox. The Dolphins of Whitney Young just scored six quick points to take a four-point lead with 5:30 to go in the first quarter. Marcus Jordan had the Dolphins' first bucket, and senior guard Bryan Hall had the other two.

6:26pm- To catch you up, Helen Cox is leading 23-20 about five-minutes of the second quarter.

6:27pm- Sophomore guard Ahmad Starks, has come off the bench and caught fire. He has hit three three-pointers and a two, giving him 11 points. He has helped Whitney Young tie the game up at 23.

6:28pm- Greg Monroe, who is steping to the free throw line right now, has 13 points, including a three-pointer. He hit one of two from the stripe, and Helen Cox is up a point.

6:30pm- The first half just ended, and Helen Cox is on top by a score of 26-23, as Taj Givens hit a long with under 30 seconds to go.

6:51pm- Helen Cox is up 39-30 with about 2:30 left in the third quarter. Greg Monroe just showed off a nice handle and some good quickness. He truly is a wonderful talent.

6:53pm- Monroe's handle was just on display again, as was an uncanny ability to find the open man. Monroe is extremely well-rounded. He can dribble, shoot, play down-low, pass, and run. He did just get beat on D, though. It's 45-32 with 21.7 to go in the third.

6:55pm- It will remain 45-32 heading into the final quarter of play.

6:58pm- AJ Rompza, a guard from Whitney Young, just drained a long two. He has a great shot and great range.

7:04pm- I have been very impressed with Monroe. His is the tallest guy on the court, but can do just about everything. Georgetown is getting a truly special player.

7:06pm- Helen Cox leads by nine, 50-39, with about 4:15 left in the game.

7:07pm- There was another pretty play by Monroe. He faked a pass, began to drive, and then dished it down low to a teammmate for an easy layup.

7:09pm- Whitney Young is down 11 with 2:24 left, and can't get anything going on offense.

7:12pm- Rompza just hit a three to cut the lead to eight, then Monroe hit a close-up shot. Ahmad Starks responded with a three-ball. The lead it now down to seven for Helen Cox, with 1:50 remaining.

7:15pm- Rompza is at the line with 1:33 remaining. He hit both. It's 56-51 in favor of the Cougars. Rompza just drained a three after a teammate stole the ball. It's a game! Helen Cox is up 56-54 with 1:20 left.

7:17pm- Senior guard Calvin Thompson missed both shots at the line.

7:18pm- Marcus Jordan is going to the line ater being fouled while driving and shooting. Jordan hits both shots. Tie game.

7:19pm- Senior center Trevon Flores grabbed an offensive rebound and put it in for the Cougars, who lead 58-56. Flores just scored again. It's 60-56. Marcus Jordan missed a shot prior to the second Flores bucket. Next time with the ball, Jordan lost his handle on the ball.

7:20pm- Calvin Thompson just missed the first of two at the line. He then hit the second. 61-56.

7:21pm- Rompza missed a three, but Jordan got the board and scored, cutting the lead to three with 11.3 left.

7:22pm- Helen Cox has eight team fould, while Whitney Young has 10+. Cox has the posession arrow.

7:23pm- Monroe is at the line with 10.0 left. His first shot is short. That's four misses in the last five free throws for the Cougars. He hit the second.

7:24pm- Rompza dribbled down and missed a three-ball. The game is over and Helen Cox won 62-58.

7:58pm- I spoke with Greg Monroe prior to the game, and I talked to Calvin Thompson after the contest. Again, I will be putting up all these interviews as my time allows.
